After you've had low back pain once, you're likely to have it again.

And the more time you spend sitting--whether at your desk, in your car, or in front of the TV--the more you need to do to keep back pain away.

You can start helping your back by watching how you stand, sit, sleep, and lift.

When you stand, or walk, don't slump or arch your back too much. Stand tall!

If you have to stand in one position for a long time, put one foot on a low stool, and change feet every now and then.

When you sit, use a chair that's low enough for you to keep both feet flat on the floor.

It also helps to put a small pillow or a rolled-up towel in the curve of your back.

And try to take a quick standing break about every 10 minutes.

When you sleep on your side, put a pillow between your knees.

When you sleep on your back, put a towel roll in the curve of your back.

Or you can put a pillow under your knees.

And as for lifting, squat down, bending at your hips and knees--not at your waist.

As you pick up an item, keep your back straight.

Then slowly lift by straightening your hips and knees.

Keep the item close to your belly.

To put it down, squat.

Keep the item close to your belly, and don't bend at the waist.

Healthy lifestyle habits can also help to keep back pain away.

So if you smoke, stop.

Manage your stress.

Lose weight if you need to.

And exercise regularly.

So that's it.

The more you can protect your back with proper movement and healthy habits, the less likely your back pain is to return.
