Food does a lot for our bodies.

It gives us pleasure, brings us together to share meals, and provides nutrients.

But did you know some foods can even help you lower blood pressure?

It's true.

There's a way to eat called DASH.

That's short for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.

Just so you know, "hypertension" is what you may hear your doctor call high blood pressure.

But before you say, "Stop! Not another grapefruit-only, 500-calorie diet!"

Get this: DASH isn't about diets or starving yourself.

DASH just means you eat healthy foods packed with nutrients.

Veggies, fruits, and low-fat or nonfat dairy are power foods loaded with calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

Experts say these nutrients are good for lowering high blood pressure.

But that's not all you eat.

DASH includes whole grains, lean meats, fish, beans, and nuts.

Here's your recipe to get started: Drink skim milk with meals, or pour it on your cereal.

Have low-fat plain yogurt for snacks or dessert, and power it up with sliced bananas and other fruits.

Make a stir-fry with lots of veggies.

Make a pot of fresh vegetable soup or veggie chili with beans.

Eat your spinach! Put it in salads, or mix it in tomato sauce for pasta.

Remember-to get the most out of these nutrients, you've got to put them on your plate.

Supplements from the vitamin aisle won't work.

When you shop for groceries, buy fresh or frozen veggies and fruits.

If you buy canned foods, like tomatoes, pick the low-sodium kind.
