Video Transcript

When babies are born 3 or more weeks earlier than their due date, they may need a little extra help to keep growing.

The neonatal intensive care unit, called N-I-C-U or NICK-yoo, is a place that offers all the special care your baby needs.

Your baby may be small, but your baby's basic needs are the same as those of any newborn.

You may be surprised by all the noises and lights in the NICU.

Though it might look chaotic, all that stuff is helping the staff watch your baby closely.

That's because premature babies can have other health problems like infections, jaundice, or low blood sugar.

It's even possible that your baby may need help breathing.

Or, your baby may need help with feeding, and may be tube-fed or fed through a vein.

This special help lasts until your baby can breathe, suck, and swallow and can take all feedings by breast or bottle.

Breast milk gives your baby extra protection from infection.

You can pump breast milk and bring it to the hospital for your baby.

While your premature baby is in the NICU, you're an important part of the care team.

Ask the staff how you can get involved in the care of your baby.

They are prepared to teach you what you can do for your baby and answer any of your questions.

And they will support you in spending as much time with your baby as you can.

Because there's one thing you can do better than anyone, and that's love your baby.

The NICU team is there to care for your baby, but even the staff works in shifts.

And you need breaks too.

It can be hard to see your baby in the NICU, but remember that you and the staff are doing everything possible to give your baby the best care.

The NICU staff will know when your baby is ready to go home.

They'll watch for signs, like your baby gaining weight, and your baby's body temperature and heart and breathing rates staying normal.

The NICU staff will also help you get ready to give your baby the best care possible at home.

And if your baby is going home with medical equipment, they will teach you everything you need to know to set up and use the equipment.

Your baby may start life's journey early and in the NICU but you'll discover how strong the tiny can be.
