Cancer treatments like chemotherapy or radiation can sometimes cause side effects like nausea vomiting or losing your appetite.
Your doctor can give you medicines to help with nausea and vomiting and they work well for many people.
And there's a lot you can do at home too.
During treatment, your body needs energy and strength.
But eating may be tough if you're sick or if food doesn't taste good.
So it's important to choose healthy foods when you are able to eat ones that are rich in protein and have enough calories.
Meal replacement drinks may help you get good nutrition.
When your usual foods don't sound good, you may want to try clear broths or soups or other mild foods like toast, crackers, cooked cereals, or a gelatin dessert.
Try to drink plenty of clear, caffeine-free fluids like water just small sips at a time, if you're feeling sick.
If you vomit, you may feel better if you sip ginger ale or a sports drink like Gatorade or Powerade.
But wait about an hour before trying to sip anything.
When you eat can make a difference too.
It may help to keep a routine like eating five or six smaller meals throughout the day.
Eating a light meal or snack before or during a chemo treatment is helpful for some people.
Or you might wait a little longer after your treatment and then eat.
Find whatever schedule works best for you.
To help take your mind off of feeling sick, you can try doing enjoyable things that hold your attention like watching a movie or playing a game.
Or it might help to try something new, like muscle relaxation or guided imagery.
Or just take a little time each day to sit and breathe deeply, and focus on the moment try to clear your mind of your worries and fears.
On days when you feel up to it, you could try getting some activity.
It can actually help your appetite and your mood.
But just do what feels okay for you and gradually do a little more as you're able to and as your doctor advises.
Some people use complementary therapies like acupuncture along with their regular cancer treatment.
Let your doctor know about anything you'd like to try.
Keep in mind that different things may work for different people.
So try to find what helps you feel better.
