In plasma exchange, whole blood is withdrawn and the liquid portion (plasma) is separated from the red and white blood cells and replaced with a saline and albumin (protein) solution.</p><p data-fingerprint="9dd8f4a5" data-fingerprint-exact="247a7b9d">Plasma exchange requires access to a large vein.
