Video Transcript

Having cancer can feel like navigating a storm.

It may take some time to feel like you're on solid ground.

And even then, you may still have times when you feel a bit unsteady.

Even when you're facing your toughest days, and it seems like nothing can help, keep your focus on what's important to you.

Think about the little things you enjoy ...

things that give you hope and courage ... or a sense of purpose.

It may be calling a good friend ... or writing down a list of priorities.

Focusing on a small goal each day may give you confidence too.

It's about finding what works for you.

Often ... the strength you need comes from within you.

[Hank] "My friends pulled me up on some really tough days.

But they can't be there twenty-four-seven.

So I learned to rely on myself just as much.

You find ways to make every day count ... do the things you love."

[Marilyn] "I look to my grandkids.

Each day is a gift ... and I want as many days with them as possible.

I like to soak up their energy.

And it gives you courage, like 'You know what, I can get through another treatment.

I don't like it, but I'll do it.' "

[Tammy] "My best friend, Megan ... we have fun together.

I think that's what I needed most ... to laugh ... to feel like myself.

Sometimes you have to call a friend and say, 'You won't believe what happened today' ... or 'I just need to talk.' "

[Robert] "My faith kept me going. Even in that initial shock.

Praying ... putting my trust in something bigger than myself.

It's not like every fear goes away for good, but I do feel at peace ... a sense of hope."

[Amanda] "Some days you're going to get mad or discouraged ...

and you don't have to pretend everything's okay.

Writing down what I was going through helped me a lot.

I'd write about things that gave me hope ...

like the important people in my life ... or my goals for the future."

[Hank] "I have to focus on day-to-day goals ... stay busy ...

so at the end of each day, I can say 'This was tough, but I'm doing what I can.

I got through this test. I put one more treatment behind me.' I feel like I'm still in charge."
