Video Transcript

You can't undo the damage that COPD has already caused in your lungs, but you can take steps to prevent more damage, stay active, and maintain your quality of life.

First ... and most importantly ... don't smoke.

Quitting smoking can help prevent more damage to your lungs.

If you've already quit, that's really great.

If you need help to quit, talk to your doctor.

Avoid the things that bring on a COPD attack ... your triggers.

Colds and the flu are triggers for a lot of people.

So do all you can to avoid getting sick.

Get a flu shot every year and a shot for pneumonia.

Bad air is another common trigger, so try to stay home with the windows closed on days when pollution is high.

Take your medicines correctly and have a COPD action plan.

Your medicines help you breathe easier.

And an action plan tells you exactly what to do when you're having a bad day, or when you have a flare-up.

Don't forget to exercise regularly and eat well.

Walking is a great activity.

And regular, healthy meals will help keep your muscles strong and prevent weight loss.

Learn breathing methods ... such as breathing through pursed lips ...

to help you if you get short of breath.

Your doctor may recommend a pulmonary rehab program that can help you.

By fighting back against COPD today, you can make a real difference in how you'll feel for the rest of your life.
