After you've had a heart attack, it's normal to worry about having another one.

But you can take steps today to help prevent another heart attack and build a strong foundation for the health of your heart.

First--and this is really important--take all of your medicines just as your doctor prescribes.

Don't stop taking any of them unless you've talked it over with your doctor.

Because if you quit taking your medicines, your chances of having another heart attack go up.

Next, be sure you're taking care of any other health problems you have, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

Take your medicines as prescribed for those problems too.

Now, medicines are important, but so is a heart-healthy lifestyle.

It starts with not smoking. Smoking, and even secondhand smoke, is really bad for your heart.

Get some exercise every day.

Walking for at least 30 minutes a day might be a good goal, but be sure you've talked with your doctor about what exercise is safe for you.

And eat heart-healthy foods, like fish, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains.

Having a healthy weight is important too.

That may mean losing some weight, but those walks and healthy foods can help with that.

Stay as healthy as you can by getting a flu shot every year and going to all of your doctors' appointments.

And if you're having a hard time dealing with your heart problems or you feel depressed, talk it over with your doctor.

And last on your list for heart health ...

Talk with your doctor about joining a cardiac rehab program.

Cardiac rehab will help you do all these things that are good for your heart and your peace of mind.
