Even though you can't change how much time you have with your doctor, you can do things to make the most of your visit.

First, get ready.

Prepare for every appointment ahead of time.

Make a list of your main symptoms.

Include when they started and what you've done to treat them.

Write down the three questions that you most want to have answered.

Make a separate list of all the medicines, vitamins, and supplements you take.

Include prescription medicines and over-the-counter medicines, such as pain relievers or cold medicines.

Write down how much you take and how often.

Next, get involved.

Become a partner with your doctor.

Listen carefully to what your doctor says.

Ask the questions you've written down.

Ask the doctor to explain if you don't understand something.

Make notes to help you remember.

Let your doctor know your concerns about your diagnosis or treatment.

Ask if there is more than one option for tests or treatment.

This will help you choose the option that's right for you.

Write down your diagnosis and treatment plan.

Be honest and direct with your doctor about what you will do or will not do.
