Eye photography can help detect disease in the back of the eye from diabetes. Some people have pupils that are too small for a photograph to be taken. To make your pupils slightly larger, these patients will receive eye drops to dilate the eyes.
You will receive 0.5% tropicamide ophthalmic solution placed in the eye. This will dilate the pupil so we can take photographs. You may have a hard time driving right after using the eye drops. Think about having someone drive you to and from your visit.
There is a very rare chance of problems after using the eye drops. Problems could include:
Blurred vision
Sensitivity to light
Eye pain
Headache
Large pupils
High eye pressure
Contact your eye doctor right away if you have:
Pain
Blurred vision that lasts more than 12 hours
