Using a Condom Catheter for Bladder Management

Condom catheters allow men with bladder leakage to go through daily life without the worry of accidents. It may be used for men who have lost some or all control over their bladder. The condom catheter attaches to a urine drainage bag. It can be used short or long term to manage the bladder.

How to Apply

  1. Wash the skin with soap and water.

  2. Apply skin prep and allow to dry.

  3. Apply condom. Make sure the correct size is used. Too tight will reduce blood flow. Too loose will cause it to leak.

  4. Attach urine drainage bag.

For males who are not circumcised, make sure that foreskin is not pulled back when the condom is put on.

Remove condom for bathing.

Change condom at least every 24 hours to monitor for skin breakdown. Signs of skin breakdown include:

  • Redness

  • Open areas

  • Skin tears

If any of these happen, leave condom off and call your doctor to talk about other options.
