This handout will tell you about your endometrial biopsy. It will tell you what to do before during and after the test.
A small sample of cells of the lining of your uterus is taken to look for abnormal cells. It can also help decide whether the lining of your uterus can support a pregnancy.
You must tell us if there is a chance you are pregnant. You may need to do a urine pregnancy test.
You may take 3 ibuprofen tablets (200 mg each) or 2 Aleve® tablets (220 mg each) one hour before.
Eat a light meal or snack at least one hour before the test (do not arrive fasting).
It takes only a few minutes. The doctor places a speculum into your vagina. The doctor places a thin, plastic tube into your uterus through your cervix. We use this tube to take a small sample of cells. The doctor may place a small grasping tool on your cervix to hold it steady.
You may have some cramping. This will decrease once the biopsy is done. Taking ibuprofen or Aleve® one hour before may help with pain.
You may have some light bleeding, cramping, or spotting for up to one week.
Call your doctor if:
You have heavy bleeding (more than a normal period).
You have severe pain.
You have a fever 100.4° F or higher.
