What to Expect at Your Pin Removal Visit

Step 1

Bring a dose of pain medicine with you. Give it to your child while you are waiting.

Step 2

We will cut the cast with a cast saw. This saw is just for cutting casts and will not cut your skin.

Step 3

We will take x-rays to check for healing and confirm that the pins are ready to be removed.

Step 4

We will remove the pins. This does not take long. This may be uncomfortable or painful for you.

Step 5

We will place a splint for protection and comfort. We may use your cast to make this splint.

Extra Tips

  • Wait times are different; bring something to do with you.

  • Bring a comfort item if you would like (blanket, bear).

  • If your appointment is at AFCH, a child life specialist may be available to help distract your child. Ask your care team for this option.
