Madison Surgery Center

Getting ready for surgery

Preadmission phone call

You will receive a phone call about one week before your surgery to discuss your health history. The interview takes about 15 minutes. You will have a chance to ask questions and learn more about what to expect. Please be ready to discuss the topics below with the nurse:

  • Allergies to medicine, latex or food

  • Health history

  • Past surgeries

  • Current prescription and over-the-counter medicines you are taking and herbal supplements. We will ask you about the dosage and schedule.

Arrival call

We will call you between 1–3 p.m. the business day before your surgery and tell you what time to arrive for your surgery.

Health changes

Call your doctor if you have any sudden health changes or are sick within seven days of your surgery.

Medicines and supplements

Tell your doctor what medicines and herbal supplements you are taking. Stop taking herbal medicines one week before your surgery.

Diet

We will tell you when to stop eating and drinking. If you do not follow the eating/drinking directions, your surgery could be canceled or postponed.

Do not eat or drink on the day of your surgery unless you have been told otherwise by Madison Surgery Center staff or your surgeon. If there are medicines you were told to take, take them with a small sip of water.

Childcare

Arrange for someone to watch your children on the day of your procedure. Do not bring children with you.

Interpreter services

We will provide a certified medical interpreter, if needed, at no cost to you.

Transportation

Due to the sedation medicines, you must have a responsible adult drive you home. This person must also stay at Madison Surgery Center throughout your stay, and care for you at home for at least 24 hours. Please note that this person will hear private health information. We do not have a large waiting room so please only bring one person with you.
